Welcome to the team page of the England Data Doctors
- The England Data Doctor Team is one of the England Project's Profile Improvement Teams and is managed by the England Project and the Team Leaders Janet Wild and Derrick Watson.
- The England and the Data Doctor Projects appreciate of all the work you the England Data Doctors Team do to improve profiles on WikiTree by correcting suggestions identified in the data. Together we are making the whole tree more readable, more accurate and more informative.
- Members are encouraged to adopt counties and suggestions to work on. Just add the suggestion number(s) or county next to your name in the team list. It is fine for more than one person to work on the same error or the same place, the more the merrier.
- If you want to go straight to the most up-to-date list of suggestions for England profiles needing your help then click here. This table is also reproduced at the foot of this page.
Latest news and how you can help now (30 Apr 2024)
- If you enjoy challenges - the link to the weekly global data doctors challenge is in the green banner at the head of this page.
- Alternatively - directly helping out on those most relevant to the England profiles.
- These are things that are really important for the structure and meaning of the tree and are mostly showing good trends in being fixed:
- Gender: Well in control. We get of the order of 20 new gender errors every week and these are cleared up within the week.
- Dates: Has had a good steady trend in getting fixed, but there are still a lot of them. Unfortunately starting to trend up again.
- Relationships: These are what a family tree is all about. Thankfully we have only a low percentage of relationship issues, but even that few is too many. Needs as much input as you can give as this is quite volatile.
- These are ones that will help the tree to function better (like being able to find the right person in the right place):
- Names: Self evident why this is important. Mostly they are very easy to fix, and like Gender, we only get a few dozen new ones every week. Once we get the total down it should be easy to maintain. Having a bit of a purge at the moment, please join in if you can spare some time. Now down to under 200 and counting, but slower now we are into the more difficult ones. Keep up the great work.
- Locations: Really important, especially for our Connector friends. Consistency is key for doing searches and we are doing a really good job on these. There is still a lot to go at, In the last twelve months we've fixed over 30,000 while having an extra 22,000 thrown at us. This is really impressive perfomance. Still lots to do but we've shown that we can do it.
Who we are
- Here's a list of the England Project Data Doctors and our adopted suggestions and counties:
What we do
- Actually, if you've come to this page in the first place, you've probably got a good idea of what we do - we fix things.
- That covers a wide range. It's not just things that are actually wrong but also things that could maybe just be a little better. That means everything from:
- fixing someone's typo - it's surprising how putting in a "?" instead of the correct "/" into a referencing statement can make a complete hash out of how a profile appears;
- linking profiles together - parents may appear on a FindaGrave link who are already on WikiTree, but the connection hasn't been made yet;
- putting right some strange relationships - people being married to the same spouse twice, or people being married to their own siblings.
- and lots of others, it's quite a long list
- Some people are very keen on fixing particular types of error, some like following up on suggestions and growing the tree that way, others like working in a particular location. Whatever is your particular like or dislike, there are plenty of suggestions to go around and your help will be much appreciated.
How you can help
- Any help you can give to improve our profiles by reducing suggestions (errors) is appreciated, even if it is only fixing one or two each week.
- Quality over quantity - One small note, whatever it is you do while fixing suggestions, please leave a message on the profiles amended and include the link to the suggestion list. For newer Profile Managers it will act as a reminder of the "How To" pages, besides which, it's just plain polite. While adding comments may slow the rate of clearance it is using the opportunity to teach others and potentially reducing the number of suggestions both old and new.
- Having said that, if you've worked on a profile and it is unsourced, please don't hesitate to give it an Unsourced|County tag (put it in curly brackets before the Biography heading). Just a name or website or a broad statement doesn't count as an adequate source for a profile, and every profile should have at least one decent source. While we wish to reduce suggestions we also wish to build the quality and look of profiles through sourcing and biography building. Even better if you can add a source or improve the biography yourself while you're there.
- As a Data Doctor for the England Project you might want to do more. There are some ideas below.
Adopt a Suggestion
- If there is a particular thing that you like to work on you might like to consider adopting that suggestion. It can be anything from a single error type like DBE105 - the same sibling has been put in twice - to something more generic like all errors in to 860s (referencing), and it doesn't matter if someone else has also adopted that suggestion, there is more than enough to keep everyone busy.
- If you'd like to do this, please let one of the team leaders know what you are working on and we'll make a note of it on the list of team members. You don't end up owning that suggestion and you're not committing to clear every last one of them, it's just nice to let other's know that someone is keen on that issue. Plus it's a bit of a thank you from the rest of us for doing so.
County Data Doctor
- Join your county's team. Work on reducing any or all of the suggestions (errors) for your county. There are links to each county's individual suggestions list in the table above.
- Again, please let one of the team leaders know where you are working and we'll add you to the list.
Your own Watchlist
- It may seem obvious, but just how many suggestions do you have on your own profiles? If you haven't done so recently, you might want to take a look. If you've never noticed them before, just go to your own profile page, hover over the "MyWikitree" link at the top and select the "Suggestions" tab from the dropdown menu.
- As you're here on the England page, it's a fair bet that quite a few of your profiles are in England, and every suggestion that you clear on your own list is one less on the England list. Double win!
Maintain for England
- Help to reduce the number of profiles in the England Maintenance Categories especially the Serious Data Problems
- Links to the other England teams are given towards the bottom of the page. Please visit and review what our colleagues are busy doing. Thanks
How well are we doing
This table shows the week to week changes in the numbers of suggestions, together with the most recent totals for each type of suggestion. Anything in green is down to people resolving the suggestions (Hoorah! - please give yourself a pat on the back), anything in red is a net increase - we're finding new ones faster than we're sorting them out.
Any section that has a blue background has achieved "Maintain" staus - all historic errors have been fixed and all we need do is to fix new ones as they crop up. The aim of course is to get this table as green as we can first and then get it all in the blue.
England Suggestions - Changes over the week

- Comments:
- Some suggestion types are deliberately in grey. They are hints for further research only. They may be valid and useful, or they may lead no further than someone else's unsourced and ill-researched tree.
- Profile Completeness is also greyed out. They appear in response to requests for them by individual profile managers for their own profiles and their own use only.
- There are lots of ways of looking at these numbers and lots of ways that targets and ambitions could be set around them, but one easy measurement and comparison that can be made is to look at the percentage of profiles that have suggestions of any sort (excluding Profile Completeness). As of the end of August 2020 that figure for England as a whole was 4.1%. The best examples of what can be done are Bedfordshire and Nottinghamshire, both counties with more than 20,000 profiles in them, where those teams have got the suggestions rate to below 2% . Well done to the teams involved 💚
Active suggestions - the difference between the England list and the World Wide list
- 5th November 2023 - Wikitree worldwide active suggestion types 321 - England has 263 active suggestion types. England has 56 types of suggestions with Zero suggestions . Overall the figures show we did well in maintaining our suggestions rate, but some categories are back to green or red. so please keep fixing our suggestions💚

Please welcome new Data Doctor Lee Martin, Lee is a member of the Suffolk Team and will be working on the Suffolk suggestions.
Thanks Lee for joining the England Data Doctor Team, we look forward to working with you.
Janet and Derrick
Derrick review some of the stats so we could let you know how we are doing in reducing the England suggestion lists. Based on stats from the middle of last January 2022 when the new class of Span errors was introduced.
On Jan 9 when these came in we had a total of 176,898 errors (out of 2.9 million profiles, that's an error rate of 6.1%.) As of mid-January 2023, we had a total of 135,445 (out of 3.4 million profiles, 3.9%). That is pretty good going and we'd love to see it continue like that. A big thank you to everyone who has put the effort in on our suggestions mountain.
We also have 55 types of suggestions with Zero suggestions, this makes them easy to manage and keep at Zero.
Thanks from Janet and Derrick

Half the year is gone already. Ales over the months has continued to review suggestions and has added or changed the suggestion structure, these changes added large numbers to England's suggestion list. You guys have been up to the challenges, the World Wide list in July shows 301 active suggestions, and England has 248 so we have 53 suggestion types with 0 suggestions as of 3rd July.
Since the last major addition (span errors in the first week of January) the team have fixed over 26,000 errors net. The actual number fixed will be about double that as we get on average 1100 new ones every week.
Back in September last year we had the whole top 12 error types go green, currently, we have the top two error types in dark blue, with 3 errors type in green the rest are flicking between red and green, it would be wonderful to see all error types back to green over a five week period.
The Data Doctor Team and profile Managers have worked hard over the last months to "fix" suggestions. Alongside us, the Gedi, Sourceror and Connector Teams have also been busy clearing suggestions. All our work links back into the main Profile Improvement Project Keep up the great work you all do, it is appreciated.
Best Wishes Janet and Derrick

For the first time since we started using the new "scoreboard" we have got the whole top 12 error types to go green - in other words, the five week trend on all the top categories for errors is downwards. We've fixed more errors than either got created or found.
That doesn't mean that we can rest on our laurels - there's still loads to work on, but it does mean that you all deserve an extra large pat on the back. You should feel proud of the work you've been doing.
Thanks
Derrick & Janet
